There is a pair of these local to me. The seller claims they were made in 2005. He wants 2,000$. Who actually made these and what components did they come with?
I am also curious how many pairs were made. The guys says he paid 8,000$ for this pair. I imagine at that price not many pairs were sold.

Yeah this guy has been trying to sell those off and on for about a year. Maybe more, thats just when I first noticed them.
The seller said these have 515 woofers, and 902/511b horns. The surprise is they are in plywood cabs. Seems like they could be the best built factory 828 cabs since they use modern 3/4" BB
I refer to Baltic Birch as "the roadies choice". It's very strong and holds up well to the trained monkies that beat the shit out of your gear during load in and load out.
For "hifi" use your cabinets ideally need to be fully re-engineered with regard to damping and bracing.
We have a little saying among my fellow gear heads about Baltic Birch, It's tough as hell and rings like a bell.

I'll take the durability of plywood any day. Especially in FL where humidity is the enemy. Plywood just holds up better.
Which is what you want a bass cab to do as it's well above its passband and since acoustic energy falls at 1/f, it requires little damping to get rid of it. Higher up like a 500 Hz horn you want to make it out MDF or worse since with most woods it will require being very thick to get sufficient mass to damp it to below its passband.Originally Posted by bowtie427ss

My case in point was a standard 828 cabinet with it's large, floppypanels, in particular the ones in the OP using a 900hz XO.

Actually, the original 828s to Atlanta and in the brochure were pretty decent plywood with a heavy duty paint job that was far better than any I'd seen on a factory 825 cab, so was surprised to find out here that apparently the majority were made out of MDF and that at some point had quit bracing the horn!

I am used to seeing the 825 and older 828 cabs made from plywood. I think most of the newer 828 were made from MDF. Thats why I was surprised they went back to plywood for this legacy version.Ah! Missed your point.

My 828 cabs are MDF. If I can ever upgrade to some older plywood cabs I will. Or maybe I will just build a pair. My MDF cabs do not have the motorboard that goes across the whole cabinet
